. >>> earlier today secretary of state hillary clinton said farewell to nato allies during a visit to brussels. as she contemplates the future, she may well be encouraged by a new washington post poll. asked if they would vote for her if she ran for president in 2016, 57% said yes while 37% said no. joining us is our white house correspondent kristen welker. we found out the editor of "the new yorker" said hillary clinton would run in 2016 and dustin hoffman would support her if she ran but what chatter are you hearing around the white house about that? >> reporter: democratic sources tell me the secretary of state just hasn't decided yet. she's still in the process of mulling over this decision. having said that, they also tell me that the political operation is doing what they need to do to preserve the right to run if that's what she decides to do in 2016. that's playing out behind the scenes. publicly we've seen this unfold for quite some time. her president, former president bill clinton, was president obama's key surrogate during this election cycle, setting the stage for presid

do you think we're looking at bush versus clinton in 2016? >> i think the picture on the democratic side this far out, there's a little more clarity to it -- there's a lot more clarity than the republican side. if hillary clinton were to run in 2016 there are obviously no guarantees in life or politics, but within the democratic party for the democratic nomination, she will be a front-runner like we have never seen before. and i know we sort of said that about her in the run up to '08. she had two liabilities in '08 that were gone. she was considered too much of a polarizing figure. can she get independents to vote for her in the fall. the republicans who had been just relentless critics of her for 15 years in the '90s and the last decade, they have rolled over and lionized her as sort of this alternative 1i78 boll. this is the democrat we like. there's that and the other thing that dragged her down on the democratic side was the iraq war and i think largely that's forgotten now. i think her two big liabilities on the democratic side are gone

members of president clinton's economic team, people like bob rubin and larry podesta, have put their name to a plan that calls for $200 billion more in tax revenue than even the president is asking. for more now we have with us william cohen in new york, a columnist for the bloomberg view, and clarence page, a columnist for "the chicago tribune." welcome to both of you. clarence, one thing this makes plain is democrats are feeling confident in a fiscal cliff win. why not ask for more? >> well, they're certainly asking for more than president obama is asking, and that is the point here. they feel that the policies of the clinton era that gave us the prosperity that we saw back then would be good to impose now. they are really calling for a different kind of arrangement pushing for a simplification of the tax code that would include taxes on cigarettes and alcoholic beverages which would cross income lines, those kind of consumer taxes hit lower income tax people -- taxpayers as well as upper, and they want to get rid of the amt, that automatic tax that's designed to make sure that old

president clinton used to say if you want to live like a republican, vote for a democrat because they will give you better economics. and the fact of the matter here is if you poll economists, they will tell you that raising the rates on this top 2% has virtually no impact but when you begin to go after the mortgage deduction, when you begin to go after chair itses, that's when you have some economic chill you bring into the economy. so isn't it strange that the republicans and conservatives have said that obama doesn't understand the impact of fax policy on the economy whereas almost all economists are saying the obama approach is far superior to that that the republicans offer. >> thank you both for joining us on this friday afternoon. >>> next, if reagan could, why not colbert. why south carolina should seriously consider it. stay with us. >> new york post, are we ready for senator colbert? are we ready? sfx- "sounds of african drum and flute" look who's back. again? it's embarrassing it's embarrassing! we can see you carl. we can totally see you. come on you're better than this...
